An Italian Adventure

Italy has been one of the countries I've always longed to travel to and having a 3-month summer break from University gave me the perfect opportunity to tick this of my travelling bucket list. So, Ellie and I packed our bags and away we went...
Rome
Our first stop was Rome, and to ensure that we made the most of our 72-hour metro pass. We started the first day by getting the metro to Piazza del Popolo, from there we walked to the Spanish Steps. Then, visited the Trevi Fountain, which in my opinion is one of the must-see places in Rome. (Especially in the night if you have the chance!) After drinking overpriced Ice Tea, we made our way to the Colosseum around late afternoon. This time was recommended to us as we would encounter fewer crowds. It's an incredible feeling to be surrounded with such history and culture, preserved so well.
The next day we visited the Vatican City, starting the day with a tour of the Vatican Museum. This took the longest, but it was worth the time. The displays of art over time were amazing, as each work of art presents its own insight on religious history. At the end of the tour, we finally arrived at the Sistine Chapel. The famous ceiling and The Last Judgement painted by Michelangelo was just breath-taking. We stood there for at least ten minutes just taking it in and just trying to understand its complexity. We weren't allowed to take any photos, which is a shame, but I don’t think a photograph would do it justice anyways.
Naples
Ellie and I then headed south, to Naples. When we first arrived, the Neapolitan lifestyle came with a cultural shock. However, this crowded city has found its own little place in my heart, it's the kind of place that grows on you. We found some amazing food places here that could please any appetite, and there is so much to try too! (Don’t miss out on the €1 spritz!)
During our stay in Naples, we took a day out to visit Mount Vesuvius and Pompeii. This was one of our most memorable days, and we were accompanied by Antoni, a friend we made at the hostel we were staying in. The three of us hiked up to the top of the crater which took around 45mins one way (don’t do this at mid-day, as you will burn like I did). Fortunately, we picked clear day for the hike, and the view from the top wasn’t misty and really worth the climb. Then we got a got a shuttle bus to Pompeii ruins. It’s a surreal feeling being there. I was fascinated by the impact of the eruption and how it changed the fate of the whole city. We spent many hours walking around and taking it all in. We were happy and exhausted by the end of the day.
Naples is also the perfect coastal destination to make day trips to other islands. We visited Procida, a small colourful island, with the most beautiful beaches. You can explore the whole island in less than 4 hours! It’s a tiny gem. We spent the day here relaxing, sunbathing, swimming...and missed our ferry back. Luckily, we got the last one back and we can laugh about the whole situation now.
Florence
Next, we travelled back up north to Florence. We didn’t spend long here, but what a wonderful two days! We arrived around early afternoon and headed straight into the city to see what it had to offer. We walked along the Arno River, then towards the Piazza San Michelangelo for the best view of the whole city. Finishing the day by having dinner and wine on a street. This is where we meet some older locals who were great company and gave us lots of travel tips!
Since, we only had one full day in Florence and a lot to see, we got up really early and left to go see Piazza del Duomo. Its architectural intricacy is composed so beautifully, we were in awe of it. We visited the Duomo cathedral, and it is such a contrast from the outside due to its simplistic nature. After grabbing lunch, we walked to over the Piazza Signoria, explored the Uffizi Gallery and then, had gelato whilst strolling along Ponte Vicchio. We ended our short visit by speninding the evening admiring the palette of colours that make up Florence.
Pisa
I’m sorry but the mandatory tourist photo was necessary. A day in Pisa was enough to fully explore the city and see all it had to offer. Ellie and I probably spent more time than needed at the Leaning Tower of Pisa, as we got distracted by people watching fellow tourists trying to get their poses with the tower. After lunch, we explored the cities many piazza’s, making stops at some of the little local churches. We also went to see the Murale di Keith Haring, which is a fun and interesting addition to the city.
Bologna
Bologna is a wonderful city to chill and fully indulge in the Italian cuisine. It is a highly student populated city which adds to its free flowing vibe. We started the day here in Piazza Maggiore, which is centrally located and close to many attractions. The maze-like streets are great as you can pitstop around and try lots of different foods along the way! The Basilica di San Petroniois very impressive, and one of the biggest churches in the world. Bologna has a lot of history to take in, and yet is quite modern in comparison to other cities we visited.
Venice
Our final stop was Venice, and it didn’t fail to impress. The small island is so picturesque, no number of photographs will be enough. We head straight towards St Mark’s Square, which is a stunning sight. We spent awhile here studying the area. To fulfil the complete Venetian experience, a gondola ride was a must and it was so worth it (even though I felt like I was going to fall out 70% of the time). We managed to route around the city in a single afternoon, so we spent the following day exploring the city in more detail. Also, visited the Galleria dell’ Academia which was really interesting and kept us out of the mid-day sun.
On the last day, we planned a day trip to the neighbouring island Procida. It’s famous for its vibrant houses and buildings. There isn’t a lot to do here but it was amazing to explore a different side of Italy. Life here seemed so peaceful due to less tourists. Once we arrived back in Venice, we celebrated the end of our marvellous Italian adventure trip with cocktails!
I would advise everyone to travell if you have the opportunity, there is so much to appriciate and learn. Overall, I’m so thankful for the safe, happy tripping and making new friends from all over the world. I look forward on future adventures with Ellie and making more memories!
